Shade loving Veg
« on: January 05, 2008, 13:53 »
Just a thought as I am thinking of what / where to plant stuff in my garden - a good place in terms of practicality (bottomof garden near compost heap and shed and blackberry bush) but perhaps not in erms of growing - very shadedby neighbours conifer tree hedge and liable to get a bit wet underfoot). I tend to put the sandpit etc in the warmer sunnier part of the garden so the kids don't get wet lol. Is there anything veggie wise that might like to grow here? Seems a waste of space otherwise. I don't mind putting in raised beds or pots it's more the shade I am worried about...

This is an instance where you really need to put your location in your Profile please.  Shade in one part of the country/world is very different to shade in another.

[Yes I know I keep asking this & I will keep keep on asking it too]

Thank Jaye - Macclesfield eh, I can see why you didn't volunteer the info!

Deep shade and conifer hedge roots / acidity.  Hamburg Parsley is the most shade tolerant thing I know but spinach, beetroot, lettuce are all worth a try.  Comfrey will tolerate shade too but won't produce half as much as it would in full sun.

You will note that I use shade tolerant rather than shade loving  :)

Thanks for the tips WG - comfey is a herb I know - what is it used for other than teA?

Splodger - I could put raspberries near the shed - I am thinkig of moving the blackberry bush slightly up and training it into an arch on the entrance to the shed. It's gone a bit mad and started climbing the washing line so I had better find somewhere for it to go lol

Comfrey makes a great liquid feed for other veg.  I'd say that more folks use it for fertiliser/compost than for tea.

When you say 'tea' Jaye, do you mean a tea that you drink, or a feed made from the leaves to be used for plants?

I don't think comfrey is safe to take internally over a long period of time.
