I grew mine in pots (well small trough style pots) last year

What wa the earliest you started them Boothy, as they're in pots could you start some  bit earlier and keep in unheated greenhouse/cold frame? Seems logical as some Nov planted onions/garlic are sprouting now.

If fact would they be a nearly all year round crop if given protection?

I'll stick some White Lisbons in a pot in Feb, and keep in greenhouse, I should have room until seed planting time at end of March to give them a good start.

What variety were they, Boothy? They look good 'uns. I'll make a note for about 20 yrs time when I've used up my present stock!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

These ones are almost certainly Japanese bunching onions, same as Welsh onions(Allium Fistulosum) and as such, yes. They originate from cold Asia(China? Siberia?) more than winter hardy on our climate. My Welsh onions are out there in the green without protection all winter.

Onion (Allium Cepa) and its crosses with A F and leeks to stop them from bulbing are a bit less hardy but it depends on variety.

I grew spring onions in a grow bag a couple of summers ago (i've had 2 years off cos f pregnancy nd little baby and ill-health). I would definately grow them again. They were great for my first veggie growing attempt - i tell you what though taste wise they were VERY strong.

My dad ( a Scot by birth) could grow Welsh onions like weeds. All mine do is shrivel up and die   . Sometimes they look like they have been eaten, sometimes not. Over the last few years I have tried spraying with everything I have (at intervals to cover all possibilities) but still they die. Does anyone have any ideas? My leeks, bulb onions, seed sown spring onions and garlic were all fine last year, but the Welsh ones weren't.

My best idea Nikki is to start a new strain from fresh seed and lose the old stock.

Thanks Gobs

Anyone got any Welsh onion seed I can have to give it a try? I'll willingly pay postage.
