In an entirely different thread on another forum, tumble drier sheets mounted flag style on canes were said to be effective at repelling various mammals (cats in particular, but also deer).

Makes me wonder whether it's worth trying the same dodge to confuse onion and carrot flies.

I'm a sets man, for sake of simplicity really, and have always grown Turbo, being very impressed with their keeping qualities.
As it happens ,though, they've become difficult to find, and I ended up growing Stuttgart Giant last season. They're a tasty onion, but are already showing signs of deterioration in storage.

What have you found to be the best keeper from the seed-grown maincrop onions?
Rijnsburger.  never grown it ourselves but been told it stores very well.

I grow it,nad they store well, taste good to.

plant em out towards the end of april early may and make sure they are well hardened off,i plant mine a thumb deep (3") once they start to swell and the roots get a hold you can gently brush the soil from them,
heres mine from last year just before planting out,and the seed sown ones are keeping better than the set grown.

feed the soil not the plants
organicish

The only onions I've ever grown successfully from seed are spring onions!  So for cooking type onions, I buy sets and as I'm forever financially embarrassed, I buy from Wilco.  Last year was my best year yet, and I grew some red onions from cheap sets too.  Okay, you don't get the variety, but at least my onions lasted me longer than ever before!!!

Just not long enough!

You're making me think I may try again with seed, but I'll plants set as well to cover all bases!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Ditto, I wonder if they aren't getting enough nitrogen, they just never seem to flourish for me. :(

I never had any success with them, so I had given up on them.

But at the autumn seed quality talks it shocked me, they were the worst offenders on the bad germination league table of bought seeds.
