I'm only one day in to chicken keeping, but i've read they can drown easily if they can't get out of water.  Hope you get a more experienced reply!

Water is a definate no no for chickens, they cant swim and the weight of their feathers would drag them under if they fell in a pond. The only bath a chickens has is a dust bath. And no question is silly, if you don't know, you're right to ask. Better to be safe than sorry :)

I agree with Carla.  Best not to mix chickens and water apart from drinking water.  Also there is no such thing as a silly question on this forum.  It's good to ask  :)

Whilst a pond is not advisable around chickens a bath is advisable for the following situations:-

Dirty rear end:- if your chicken has pooey feathers around their vent especially in the spring/summer - the reason being to stop blowflies laying their eggs and maggots hatching.
Egg bound chicken:- placing a chicken in warm water when they are egg bound will help relax their muscles so the egg can pass. In both of these situations you will be on hand to stop the chicken from drowning.
Show birds:- people showing birds will also bath their birds to ensure their birds are clean for the show  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

My friend's ducks and chickens share a run & the chickens never go near the ducks' water - a plastic children's paddling pool so only a few inches deep.
