Please give me your sweet pea growing tips
« on: November 11, 2023, 21:52 »
I’m going to try sowing sweet peas tomorrow and overwintering in my equivalent of a cold frame . I’ve always done spring sown until now, with mixed results but never really achieved very vigorous growth. Any tips for winter sowing ? Thank you.

I haven’t grown sweet peas for a while, but I always used to start overwinter.  They grow quite quickly so long as it is not too cold and the best bet is to keep pinching the tops out.  That way you end up with short, stocky plants with half a dozen or so shoots.  Once you get to spring, all those shoots will grow and produce flowers, so you end up with a lot of coverage.

As you are looking to produce a good sturdy root system, it is worth using a slightly bigger pot as well as feeding occasionally.  I usually have onion seedlings and shallots and broad beans in pots early in the year, so have a bottle of liquid feed on hand.  It lives in the cupboard under the sink so I can get to it easily rather than having to venture to the shed.  Using that at half strength every couple of weeks really does make a difference to anything growing through Jan/Feb, even if you don’t think they are really moving much.

I agree with New shoot. Also wait until the seedlings have about 4-5 decent pairs of leaves and a clear stem before you nip off the top of the stem.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Thank you both that is really good advice. Wouldn’t have thought of feeding them but with today’s lousy compost that’s probably a must. I was going to grow them in toilet rolls but maybe that’s not roomy enough and I should do them in pots? My “cold room” space is limited ( it’s just a little cubicle at the top of the back stairs leading to the backyard) . I also  have broad beans in pots. They are outside as I find they can cope with most weathers except a very hard frost.

I would go for pots. In my experience, a few stockier well grown plants will give you more flowers than a larger number of spindly ones.
