Anybody any suggestions as to what this Tomato is?
« on: September 17, 2013, 16:03 »

Has anybody any suggestions as to what this tomato is?

I bought it as Brown Berry from a well known internet source of tomato seeds but it looks nothing like the image on their website, nor does it look like Brown Berry tomatoes that I have grown in previous years.

I've asked them and the only response I've had so far is "this has not been reported before" which is not very helpful.

I've been looking through the web to see if I can find others similar but without luck.

Internally it looks like a cooking tomato (Roma or San Marzano) but its colour is nothing like either of those.

I realise it could well be a cross between Brown Berry and something else but it makes me nervous of buying more seeds from this supplier if I don't know what I'm getting.

I would agree with your surmising that it is a Roma - mine look a bit like that, bit redder maybe.
They look very healthy though.

If it tastes bitty, it's probably a cooking tom ;)

I agree with you that the colour is not right for San Marzano.  Too red I think.  Too big for Principe Borghese but the right colour and shape.  I think Roma is most likely along with devon.

It " is" Brown berry either of some bad seed or else with them, I just read another gardener complaining about them, looking just like that for no reason he can fathom.

I'd say unripe Roma since the seeds are still green. They'll get green shoulders before they're ripe.

My guess is that the screening process got contaminated - this happened to me once and the company identified the variety and were most apologetic.

Anyway - I would be tempted to look at the other varieties of tomato that the company offer as it's likely to be one of their other offerings if not all of the old seed was cleared out of the grading/packing machines before the next batch got tipped in. Of course the company selling the seed might not be the growers/seed processors which will make the ID harder, but maybe the seed packet will give you some clues.

Great opportunity to save some seed for next year! (assuming it wasn't an F!).

It does look like a Roma, but grown as a cordon, they do seem to be bigger, like those in the pic. I always grew them like that!

'HG22' Tomato does seem to have a certain ring about the type, and nobody can ever prove you wrong!

Thanks to all for your suggestions.

They're definitely not Roma (the camera seems to have been generous to the colour and they're more the colour of a black tomato - Japanese Black Triefele colour).

The supplier also does a "Black Truffle" which I grew last year and was nothing like this. The green shoulders are a bit like cherokee purple.

As to flavour, its certainly only any good for cooking but it seems to make quite a good rich sauce.

I'll keep some seeds for next year and see it it runs true.

I would be fairly sure it's brown berry. Mine are slightly browner, but still nothing like the pictures, and the same overall shape and size by the look of it (see photo).

EDIT: although, then again, my seeds were also bought online.... maybe the same place and same batch!

I've grown Brown Berry in the past from T&M and they were very different.

These were from Premier Seeds Direct.
