My onions this year are really hard and crunchy.. What could have caused it?
I planted them (sets) beginning of march. Because the plot was so bad I dug in manure (fresh horse manure mixed with lots of shavings), a sprinkle of chicken pellets and a dash of growmore. I sort of top dressed with some ash half way through the growing season thinking they needed it but found out they dont!! .. Even when they were youngish they were hard.. I grew 7 varieties and they all seem the same..
I have done the same every year in my roof top garden in the tubs and never had this - There is nothing wrong with a crunchy onion and I'm sure they will keep extra long like this.. Just confused..

My shallots are the same. I pickled them about 10 weeks ago and they are so hard. I pickled shop bought shallots at the same time and they are ok.

Great pic Bing but what has it got to do with my question?

I think Bing is trying to say it could be due to all the rain we've had this year ;)
Love the piccy Bing :)

I know I'm guilty of blaming everything thats gone wrong, not grown, not thrived, rightly or wrongly, on the weather this year
-
I think its a fair blame- either than or I have just become rubbish at growing everything that I have managed to grow well previously!
Hence lets blame the weather!
Stops me going quite so mad :tongue2:

I think we have every right to blame the weather this year
Working in a garden centre, you really get to see how the weather affects folk. Getting begged if I could possibly get courgette and runner bean plants by despairing veg gardeners in July and August qualifies as an exceptional year. I even had a lady ask if she could buy our display pot of runner beans. Not sure how she was going to get a huge pot with 6 foot canes covered in beans home
