I usually grow shallots for pickling and this year I have Red Sun and Golden Gormet, both of which I've grown before and pickled.  Shallots stay crisper for longer in the vinegar.

The nice thing about doing your own is that you can choose the brine and vinegar to suit your taste and add whatever you fancy.  Chillies and bay leaves usually make into mine  :)

Paris Silverskin onions make nice picklers.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

OOOohhhhh I've got some seeds of them.  50p seed sales again  ::)  Was going to grow them as giant spring onions like you see in the shops, but will pickle some as well now.

This is probably a really dumb question, but are they the same as the silverskin onions you see ready pickled in the shops or is the name a coincidence

They're the same, but better when home pickled!

That's exactly what I do.

Here's a piccie of them growing a couple of years back, alongside the other onions.

They're the two rows, slightly lighter green, left of centre.

I pay a lot less than that at my local nursery.

In any case I've saved my own this year - I'm doing that more and more - must be getting really tight!

DD  -  are you growing the silverskins in small groups, can't quite tell from the photo.  Also do you sow direct or into modules first.

I've a pack of seeds that didn't get sown last year (seems strange saying last year, 1 day into the new year), and don't like them going to waste but have never grown this type before.

Direct into the ground, as thinly as possible.

That, however, is impossible with my 10 thumbs, but don't worry too much as they push each other aside as they swell.
