Hello.

Our new plum rootstock has decided to pursue a solo career below soil level, I'd like to try and grow the rootstock branches to make new rootstocks rather than just pruning out. How best do I propagate them?

If I leave these branches growing will they put out roots at the bottom or am I best cutting them off and treating as cuttings? I was reading about air propagation and wondering if I dug down to where they emerge from the trunk and cut off a bit of the branch would roots grow? Or an infection?

I can get photographs if anyone needs, but it just looks like a pile of branches infesting the bottom of the tree. The cherry is of the same attitude but above the ground and I treated them the same as a currant cutting after a quick peruse of videos.

Hello if it's a small tree nick the bark put a large bottomless plant pot round it and fill with soil after a few months roots should have formed,if the shoots are below the graft level they will produce what the parent rootstock is jezza

He was better than the ones I watched.
It's what I was doing with the cherry rootstock branches-they are above the soil.
When it stops raining I'll snip the rootstock branches below the ground but leave attached to the parent.

I have some good news, I took at look at Husband's Discovery and it had 3 little branches coming up from underground. 3 of the 4 had a few roots so I took them home in case they got damaged by allotment disgracefulness. The big branch also has some roots so I heaped earth up over that in the hope that we can separate that off as well when we have to lift it.

I hope I can get a reply without starting a new thread.

One of the community pear trees scions has died and the root stock has put out 3 or 4 little branches. The trunk is less than 2 inches across and the new growth is this year's growth.

Is it better to try and graft onto the new growth, or cut the trunk back to the rootstock and graft onto that?

There is another pear growing next to it so getting a cutting shouldn't be hard.
