Title: what time is bed time for your chucks
Post by: grumpydad on June 03, 2010, 22:06
mine have just gone to bed in the last 2 minutes, it is dark outside, but the "essex girls" ( bet i will be in trouble now ! ) have just gone to bed, big sal went over 30 mins ago.

oh, and they have learnt how to get over a closed lower stable door into the kitchen already.

if anyone wants to know if hybrids are any good, yes, very comical, but beware the house and garden

At the moment mine are going about 9ish.
The other night i went out to shut them up & they were still up at 9.50pm.

Mine are put away in the run for their supper and there I know they'll be safe away from foxy and they can put themselves to bed when it's dark, about 9.30 ish at the moment.  I close their door once I think they're in bed. When I approach though they usually dash out again to see if I've got any treats  :D

3 of the 4 are in by around 9.30, the last one will not go to bed until I appear to lock them down  ??? when she see me coming she will toggle up the ramp and wait until I am in the run then she will pop in. So I go over around 9.45ish now.

Last night I was trying to get mine in just after 10pm.  It will be a battle of wills when it is still light here at 11pm in the next month :(  They are permanently in a run but I like to shut them in the coop for the night.  If they have only just gone in they come running out to see what I might have for them :)

My girls are tucked up in bed at 9 every night, they could be there earlier but when I check at nine they are already in.

As mine free range I let them decide when to go to bed and usually go out around 9.30 to shut them in. However as my tree dwelling Geraldine went broody and hatched me 5 araucana chicks I now have a problem. She left the chicks and went back to tree dwelling when they were 5 weeks old which in itself is fine but for the last 2 nights 4 of the chicks have decided to join her and roost in the trees . I have spent the last 2 nights between 9.30 and 10 trying to knock them out - boy was I getting mad last night. Me doing this sets of the guinea fowl so they start with their loud racket - good job my neighbours don't live too close to me
The moral of this story - never use a broody tree dweller to hatch any eggs unless you like running round knocking birds out of trees and looking like a complete lunatic  ::)

the other araucanas hatched by tree dwellers sister Dannii are well behaved though they only take about 10 mins of chasing them to get them in their coups  :D

10.05 again, and they all had to be pushed in, this is beyond a joke, they all had tennis ball crops, plenty of poo in the morning then.

only 2 and a half weeks before the nights start drawing in again. I must say I have had a couple of nights when I wanted my bed before they did...but it is a waste of time trying to put them in before they are ready. They go in in the wrong order, and come flying out in a flurry of feathers as the others put them them in their place.

They are only allowed in according to pecking order, but the lowest does go in first, and hides in the corner on the floor before the others pile in, otherwise he has to run the gauntlet and they all have a peck on his way in, bless.
