I've been meticulous about removing side-shoots from my celeriac but despite the great weather the outdoor ones are barely the size of a small apple. The ones in the polytunnel are going great and are about grapefruit size. Will the outdoor ones eventually swell and am I being impatient?

are you feeding them. They are greedy feeders.

last year I left mine in the ground until quite late to let them get a bit bigger. This year looks like being bigger. It is still early to worry yet.

The shoots referred to are actually the top stalks, the celery looking things. You take off almost all and leave about 3-4 at any given time. This diverts energy to the roots.

Ours are much better this year, and like Alan, they are now apple size (which is better than bean size last year)!

We water them every other day and add a dilute liquid feed each day, and now the sideshoots are down to about five, the bases are showing well.

Hmm... I have only been removing them down to 5 or 6 leaves and not feeding them but giving them plenty of water. They are showing to be the size of small apples which I thought was good for this stage but obviously not  ??? Oh well, I have plenty of them!

Oh! I really need to do this!
If I'd known that I'd have done it earlier ::)

I never do that. I can't be bothered

I grow mine in muck on top of the soil.  They like lots of rain and you'll get bigger roots than if we have a dry year
I had a bumper crop last year but they look smaller this year despite the muck they're sitting in. Still, the taste is intense and they don't need to be monsters  :)

The 'bean-size' ones we had last year, were really far to intense, and I'd like to get them so that I can make a half-decent remoulade without blowing my head off..;0)

I have removed all side shoots and left about 5 leaves on the top of each bulb/root.
Fed generously with growmore. Watered in well.
Earthed up and added a spare bag of well rotted manure compost.

Currently they are a mixture of golf ball size and tennis ball size!
So excited.

I want them to be HUGE!
