Layout for polytunnel
« on: September 24, 2013, 17:46 »
Hi,

Here's a quick sketch of a layout for our new 54 foot by 14  foot PT.

I'm looking for comments/criticisms to help make for a better layout.

Any comments welcome and thanks.

Adri

An alternative would be to have 2 aisles and that would give you (allowing for 18" - 2' for the paths) 3' - 3'6" width of beds.  4' is regarded as the maximum width for raised beds - to be able to reach from either side - so if you had 4' for the middle bed that would leave 3' for the beds at the sides, which would be about all you could reach from one side.

Your bays system seems to be to be less flexible for "row length", whereas beds end-to-end in the house you can have a row as long as you like.  Also gives you centre of the house for tall crops - which would be just the ends of your beds (near the sides the roof height will be low for things like indeterminate varieties of Tomato).

But just my 2-pennyworth :)

What were you planning to grow? The layout would be affected.

Growing anything and everything but the main aim is to give less dosh to Morrisons.

And also to have good tasty veg of course.

The reason for the layout was to use 'keyhole' beds as they increase the cultivatable area.  But maybe with a big PT like this we don't need to worry so much about that and having better access is the way to go...hmmmm...

TIA

I have a 14'x20' pt and opted for 2x 4' beds up the length of it ,but without knowing your orientation it is hard to say  :)
I cook therefore I grow
