when is the best time to sow grass seed?

We want to lawn part of the garden with a hard wearing grass for the grand children to play on. When is the best time to do this as seed or would we be better buying rolls of turf?

We're in chilly, wet North Derbyshire.

Seed is much cheaper than turf. Now-ish is a good time to sow seed, but being a bit further north than those in the warm south or in France who might advise you, I'd sow sooner rather than later to allow it to grow some before the winter dormancy. Otherwise, sow in the spring and it will romp away.

Brian used to be a landscaper, he said they always sowed lawn seed September or April

Grass adores cool weather, so as said, anytime this fall but before it gets too cold for seeds to sprout. I always wait until a rainstorm is coming then run out and scatter seed so it gets a nice soaking and buried into the existing turf.

September indeed is a good time for lawn seed sowing. I must remember to do it myself during this next couple of weeks, between showers

Actually, that's about it

Soon as I hear thunder rolling, I rush out with the seed, scatter it quickly, then run inside before it starts to pour.

Sow as soon as possible so the seed will germinate in the warm moist soil before the first frost.If you sow to late in cold wet ground the seed will just rot.One big advantage of sowing in september then in spring is that the grass will romp away in spring hopefully smothering the weeds
