Aromatic duck, hoisin sauce, pancakes and cucumber cut into small slices (sorry  brain has gone into 'shut down mode').  Matchsticks is the word I was looking for.  Bought a 'kit' with most of the ingredients in Aldi which I've finally convinced Paul to go in.

I found a 1kg bag of diced chicken breast and a large bag of stir fry veg in the freezer.   Put it all in a casserole with Ras an Hanout, tin of chopped tomatoes, some puree, and a few other bits and bobs, oh, and very small diced potato.   I had a portion today at 2.30 ish, that way the kitchen windows aren't covered in condensation.
Bagged a portion for the freezer.  Thats done me for four good meals..   Maybe a marmite sandwich later, yes definitely about 7pm ish.   Mrs Bouquet

Smoked haddock risotto with poached eggs, did it oven baked for a change but it wasn’t as nice. Himself said I hadn’t stirred the love into it! I told him he’d have to make do with the love I’d stirred into the 12 jars of marmalade I’d made him today…hence why I didn’t want to stand & stir a pan of risotto for an hour

There's a little bit of pork left, I might spice it up today and do some cajun seasoned pots using the meat juices left in the slow cooker and a tin of new pots found in the cupboard. I also found a tin of "hot chicken curry" so that'll be on the menu soon too.

I had a few white baps at lunch with some slices of fried black pudding on them.  By few I mean all and by some I also mean all.   :nowink:  I'm still utterly confused by what the difference might be between a bap, a bun and a roll.
Title: Re: What’s for tea? 2024
Post by: Goosegirl on January 12, 2024, 08:55
Up here, a bap is a floury-covered bun, a bun has no flour on it, and a roll is,well, roll-shaped. I'm having chicken, leek and spinach hotpot.

That's what I thought - but it's not.

If I want a simple round thing to stuff a burger in, ideally with sesame seeds on is it a burger bun or burger bap ? At ocado and Sainsbury's they're buns at waitrose it's a bap.  Half the time people want to get brioche involved too  :nowink:  and this thing is a crusty roll  - it is both round and flat but not at all a roll ...

Today I'm having breaded cod and a few oven chips - I at least know what they are !

OK good news to maybe motivate you.  Manjula has posted on her YouTube channel to say she is coming back with more recipes.

Also this is a fun one.  Good blokey type American food that might be up your street.

I got a half price gammon joint from work a while ago that has been lurking in the freezer, so dumped that in the slow cooker with some sliced onions, a few other veg, herbs, lots of black pepper and a little bit of water.  We had some of it for tea with potatoes and cabbage and there is a load left.

Tomorrow may be a messed around version of mac and cheese with gammon.  Correction, tomorrow will definitely be that.  I mentioned the idea to OH and he is fairly insistent it happens now

Lamb Rogan josh with rice methinks.
Sounds like an excellent idea to me, even better if someone else makes it.  :nowink:

A chorizo and bean casserole will be going into the slow cooker when I get 5 minutes. I think a bit of mash to go with it.

Did they give you a reason, the weather? I'd certainly be sending a complaint email, that's just not right to cancel rather than reschedule.

We are having a mini roast with chicken legs, rather than the whole chicken.  I have plot spuds prepped already, braised plot red cabbage defrosting, plus swede and Yorkshire puds to go with it.  I’ll find something green (peas from the freezer  ???) and also make some spoon standing.

Nearly forgot - pigs in blankets from the freezer as well, which were bought for Christmas and never used.  That’s why I am not going too mad with the roast meat element  :)

I've sent a complaint already, as no reason was given by them, and no answer yet. I've managed to reschedule for Tuesday am, but I'm still cross about it, of course. Especially the bit where they said "You'll receive your refund in 3-5 working days" what if I didn't have the money to buy food, before then?

I would be cross as well.

They need to explain themselves and I would hope offer you some compensation by way of vouchers.  If you had no more money to buy food, or were housebound or just stranded without a car and no shops nearby, that would be awful, but bad enough they have let you down and on a day when venturing out would not be wise.

I know at work we would be getting pulled up on that if we just cancelled from the shop.  It has happened before and severe butt kicking ensued. Even when drivers don’t show up or vans break down, we have to ring everyone to see if they want to reschedule or ditch the order and get a refund.

Let us know what excuse they give.  It will be interesting to see what they come back with.

There's a small amount of casserole left but not really enough for a meal and only a few spuds which are too small to warrant mashing, I'm doing a fresh loaf and will pick the broc out of the mixed veg- bit of a miss-match to use up bits.

I am trying to clear the freezer out so I can defrost it and all the winter menu stuff is in my sights.  I unearthed a pork joint today.  Well it says it is pork.  Could be woolly mammoth with the amount of ice on it  ::)

I’m cooking that later with some plot braised red cabbage and roasted beetroots I also discovered.  Leftovers are destined for a couple of tubs of curry base which I know are lurking in there as well.

Hm chicken an mushroom pie, mash and carrots with.  I'll admit the puff pastry was ready rolled but as most chefs on the telly say it's okay to use the shop stuff, I'll go with that.

Still clearing the freezer so raked out some bits today that I think were bought for Christmas breakfasts that then never happened and we had breakfast for tea

Bacon and potato cakes, plus eggs and leftover Greek Gigantes beans instead of baked beans.

I think tomorrow might be D-day (defrost day).  I’ll see if I can muster the enthusiasm in the morning

Rest of the mince off to the freezer and back to the chicken. I'm absolutely shattered today so it's in the slow cooker for shredding later, probably put it with pasta as that's about the least amount of effort I can think of, spicy rice preferred if I can summon the energy.

The freezer is defrosted  :D

Tonight we have soddages and braised plot red cabbage which were in the freezer, plus the last of the plot spuds.  That lot is in the oven and I am contemplating something green.  It might have to be peas. Opening a bag and chucking them in boiling water is about much effort as I can cope with

You haven't caught the nasty chest infection that's doing the rounds have you?  Off to bed, a phone call to your local takeaway will sort out dinner, I suggest a stupidly hot curry.

Breaded cod today a few oven chips and beans I think, no brainer and all in the oven on 1 tray.

No thankfully not a chest infection, but I’m doing my best for it not to turn into one after the last 2 I had floored me.

I’ve rummaged in the freezer and found bolognaise so that & pasta for me & I found a half bag of frozen gnocchi for himself & that’s as much as I can muster. There is a defrosted cheese sauce that didn’t get used up the other day & I toyed in turning it & the bolognaise into a lasagne but that’s a bridge too far

We bought Lakeland’s own make 2 drawer with see through panels that should sync both drawers to finish at the same time, but we failed miserably at accomplishing that attribute tonight for our
Chicken & chips.
We’d discussed it on & off & decided to go and look, there’s a shop on the Dobbies site & I just happened to have a 20% discount voucher that was expiring on Monday, so it was £99.99 - 20% =£79.99

Just peel and small-cube them and use them like kohl-rabi in a cheese sauce! Chuck in a couple of spring onions while they're steaming and you're away!

Great with a 1/4 pounder and some h/m garlic bread!

Nordic, Scandinavian, Norwegian, somewhere over that way I believe, its so simple to make and oh so delicious!
Bacon, smoked sausage, chopped onions & mushrooms thrown in a pan and cooked, then throw in some soft cheese & double cream, stir in, let it simmer for a few minutes before serving... thank me later!

Ftf previously made fish pies, 1 with & 1 without prawns, latter was mine & I batch made that but mistakenly took out the leftover 1 for himself, turned out not so much mash on that one so he had the few leftover oven chips that were lurking in the freezer & needed using up. Peas, carrots & cauliflower with a ftf cheese sauce as my pie had cheese sauce with it as I forgot the parsley when I batch cooked them , actually made a nice change.

Lunch was fried rice- leftover cooked rice needed using, various fridge gravel veg and finally tried the kimchi my son made & gave me to try- he said it was good in fried rice, and it wasn’t too bad.
Anyone else make it or eat it? What do you all have it with if so?

Quiche Lorraine with jacket potatoes.  The corner shop has had a change of management and their supplies are no longer  coming  from 'up country'.  Gemma the new Manager talks to us  and I can now get the digestive biscuits I like rather than the ones that they dictated we had.  It's a bit of a shame because 'they' said they should sell this or that , and it didn't and we were buying it cheap, but we are now getting what we need.

Weekly rummage through the odds and ends drawer in the freezer (a.k.a dumping ground of all leftovers, extra ingredients and who knows what else) turned up a small tub of chilli.  There were also cooked beans, corn tortillas and grated cheese in there, so scavenged a meal of cheese and chilli quesadillas plus refried beans.

The fridge had some salad bits that needed using, so they went on the side  :)

I reckon I get at least 1 main meal for us both and a couple of lunches for 1 of us out of that drawer every week and it stops the fridge getting filled up with bits that don’t go together.

Yes. I get them from Waitalot and, although it's not one of my favourites as the sauce is a bit runny, it's good value. I love their cottage pie and tuna pasta bake. I can cook but lose the will to live at the end of the day. Do my own veg and pots though.

I feel much the same of late and have been considering the ready meals as a quick fix.

Yesterdays liver was sadly disappointing nothing but trimmings and tubes. Always a risk with liver but it was particularly bad  :(  I did leave some for tonight but I think Max can have it instead,  I'll finish the bean casserole with the leftover mash.

Himself had the leftover beef hotpot from Saturday so I had a …shock, horror frozen ready meal-lasagne, it was ok but very runny but was helped by a goodly amount of grated cheese added to it & browned, served with some perennial brassicas, supposed to be kale, but was more psb & a little cauliflower looking head and lots of the leaves. Lamb and dhal curry that had been in the slow cooker all day.

Sigh...  :tongue2:  :(

I can't bring myself to buy lamb any more, at nearly 40 quid a leg it doesn't feel worth it when it's just me.

There's spinach and tomato quiche from somewhere in the freezer that needs using up so a break from fishy Friday and a slice is going with some oven chips and mushies and a few other veggies tonight.

We have them frozen at work for £20 each, but they were 1/2 price in the run up to Easter. Obviously you get what you pay for, but they are more than fine for curry once chunked up.

Tonight is burgers (50/50 steak mince and finely chopped mushrooms), oven chips and salad.

 Im not sure we have one locally and the website doesn't like my VPN but I'd add it to the rotation even at 20 quid, as most stuff ends up in the slow cooker one way or another now.

Would be considerably nicer than the quiche tonight, which turned out to be a vegan plant based thing that I had to eat with a spoon :nowink:

Leftovers today - with a jacket if I can find one big enough not to shrivel to nothing in the microwave.   Failing that subs some other way - just not more mash.

A freezer full of diced lamb or stuff you’ve slow cooked with it is worth it and will make great emergency meals for when you need a treat.

I know what you mean about shopping data, but I’ve signed up to Trashco because non-club card prices are just way too expensive for me to deal with and that’s my nearest big shop.

Soddages for us tonight with something yet to be decided. Co-op deal - I needed bacon but it was silly money just for that, or a deal with sausages and then more money off that for having a Co-op card (which I also own).

Don’t you just love supermarket loyalty cards and their price fixing  ::)  :tongue2:

Cottage pie - that's comfort food!  (Same as what we call shepherd's pie, correct?)
The version we sometimes make uses ground turkey (allergy; I can't eat mammal meat).

Here, Cottage pie is made with beef mince
It's always been whatever was left from the Sunday roast meat put through the mincer with mash on top :nowink: It used to be a leftovers meal rather than something in it's own right.

Chicken in the slow cooker this morning - it needs to be used, the rest of the minced beef can be frozen.  There's a little mash and some carrots left, just needs a few more veggies.

Mmmmm curry  :)

Lamb and potato curry in the slow cooker today, but that is for another day.  Tonight is going to be soddages, baked potatoes and broccoli. Trasco had bargain spuds so bought a 2.5kg bag, but they didn’t have a long date on them.  The reality of eating that lot only dawned on me when I got home and then they almost immediately decided to start growing

As long as they don't go in the water - couple of tubs of emergency mash  ;)

I probably have enough bits to do a chicken dinner but I'm not overly enthusiastic about it.  I did buy some frozen sliced leeks, I might give those a try rather than the usual chunky mixed veg.

This is about right, but I use dried Oregano rather than the mint they use, and I don't add any water to the tomato mix, it needs to be a thick sauce, not runny.
