Ripening Green tomatoes.
« on: September 17, 2008, 18:13 »
As you are probably aware we have had a wet summer.

This has meant my  outdoor tomato plants  now look tired with lots of green tomatoes left.

I have pulled the vines off and because we have little window space am a little lost how to ripen them.

I have been told that they ripen in a drawer with a banana by several people.

Has anyone heard this or do you have anymore ideas.

Cheers Alan

If you have a drawer big enough for several people and a banana then go for it.  Last year I just put all mine on the windowsill and they ripened ok.
Cheese makes everything better.

No seriously its something in the banana.

Its the reason you should not put banana with other fruit.

They emit something that ripens the toms

Ethylene.  The big supermarkets (apprarently) spray it (in the chemical state rather than the banana state, am I making sense, probably not!) on unripe tomatoes in their warehouses.

Thats right Mashauk   :D  you can get veg bags from JML that absorb it so making your fruit and veg last longer.  :D  and they are washable so can be used numerous times.

We know about that, climacteric fruits they are called for your interest and there are plenty of them. The ethylene is huge in banana, apple, pear. Good practice is to leave out of drawer - people too - for a few reasons, one being that this gas does travel through walls, etc.

Ps: I was just laughing at Ice's joke there. Only message was, they need no light to ripen.

Having a tiny clue about this gas' properties that is suspect of a con or very dangerous material or both. :?

Last year I had loads of tomatoes to ripen due to blight.  They were on the windowsill and on trays on the table.  I put a banana with one tray but found that they didn't ripen any faster.  Yes, bananas give out a gas that ripens fruit faster but I didn't find it made any difference with my toms.  They all ripened eventually with no problem.

We manufacture atomic bombs too, Richie.

And a lot of deadly poisions are perfectly natural, honey.

Not that I ever meant to say this one was. 8)  But then, I don't know that much.

So you might well be right, but these bags still make me laugh though, what are they made of?

Ps: I meant the bag material might be suspect to such, not the ethylene in the fruit. :D
