Ripening Tomatoes
« on: August 03, 2015, 13:25 »
Hi All,

Hopefully we are due a bit of sun up here in Northumberland this week, I have a green plastic polytunnel with my tomatoes in, there are quite a lot of fruits set but no hint of red at all. I started feeding them last month as the fruits began to set with standard tomato feed as the recommended dosage.

I have cut back foliage from the bottom and as the leaves turn yellow to improve ventilation, cut the growing tips out of a couple of plants as they have set 4 or 5 trusses, is there anything else I can do to speed up the ripening.

Shall I leave the door closed or open, the temperature swing during July was 4.9 degrees to 49.8 degrees.

Thanks for reading and any advice that you can offer

Andy

Patience and maybe a few banana skins!  Mine are only just ripening, and I'm a little more south than you are.

I know its hard to wait, when you have all these tomatoes and you have to go out buying them! lol

If you are lifting onions, place a few under your tom plants. The gas from the ripening process will help them.

Time is what they need. Like GA's, mine are only just beginning to ripen. The only ones going great guns are the very small fruited 100s & 1000s, and the cherry sized ones are beginning to change colour. The larger ones are still firmly green.

All will be well, Andy

South coast. My first Sweet Million has turned red, and outdoor Shirley toms are only now shading into orange. Outdoor Gardener's Delight are heavy on the trusses,, but still dark green.

Cold spring means nothing's very early, even down here.
