dirty bum...
« on: November 25, 2010, 00:07 »
Hi all,
I wondered if you could help me.  I have a 28wk pol cuckoo maran who has not started laying yet.  I have noticed that over the last two days, she has had a dirty bum.  I washed her today, but within an hour, the feathers around her bum has white droppings on them and she looked a bit straggly around the bum.  I had a look and everything looked a nice pink and I couldn't see a problem.  The question is, is this normal?  She is part of my first set of chickens and I want to make sure that I don't miss anything important through ignorance.

Replies gratefully received, even if it is only to tell me to chill out.  :blush:
Thanks

I have some that get mucky bums and that is because their knickers are too fluffy. Just try to keep them clean especially when we get back into summer because of blowflies.
Make sure after washing them that you blow dry them thoroughly (using a hair dryer on a warm not hot setting) before sending them out again.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks Joyful.  Is there a reason why I should blow dry them?  Would they get a chill?

Thank you I am not sure if I am or not.  I give them a handful each of corn in the afternoon and occasionally some greens.  They also free range.  Do you think I need to do something else?  ???

I've always had trouble with my magpie who is a Marran cross and has a very fluffy bum.
When I first got her I was washing her or using olive oil to get the caked on poo off. Now I'm more laid back and let it go for a while because sometimes it drops off by itself. If it doesn't and it's obviously going to be uncomfortable I cut out the lump with scissors.
But be careful..... ::)

Sometimes they dont drop there knickers down far enough. I would just wash it of when you need to but dry her throurghly before she goes out.
