Help on Sore leg on chooks
« on: September 04, 2012, 18:55 »
Hi All, I have 2 chooks that have been hobbling, well 1 that I noticed then to-day the sister, I thought she was coming out in sympathy for her sister.
They have a green ring tag on them, of which I noticed a long time ago but thought when I looked that they would spread open as their legs grew now on a closer inspection they are cutting into their legs, & I am felling guilty as hell, aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrr
I have got the tags off but what can I do as an antiseptic as I don’t have any of that blue spay I’ll have to get some, is there anything I can do to help them. Why the hell do people use these tags as they must know they dig into their legs.

Many thanks,
the worst chicken keeper in the world!!!!!!

Hello Ganner,
If their legs are bleeding you might want to use purple spray as it acts as an antiseptic and will disguise the blooming areas which reduces the risk of cannibalistic behaviour.
ID bands are often used especially when people have large flocks. There is a risk of the rings damaging the underlying tissue as the chickens grow- as you have unfortunately discovered. The great thing about posting on this forum is others will learn fom your experience.
How are their legs today?

Zinc and Castor cream is also good.  Just enough so they can't eat any though.   ;)
