Winter Tip
« on: October 29, 2011, 21:23 »
Hi, I've only had my chickens a week.  I place sheets of newspaper under the perches before they go to bed, this is a great help in the dark morning and when I'm short of time as getting the kids ready for school.  I've been doing this for the past 4 mornings and its great all I have to do is pull the paper out and the coop is clean.

Yes....I line mine too. I've got 6 birds and the paper needs changing every 2/3 days then it goes in the compost bin. Quick scrub of the rungs, puff of Diatom and more paper.......
Simples!

I used to do that then they all decided to eat the newspaper! I was getting strange poops around the garden like tiny little balls then I found out the reason!! they also love to eat  kitchen roll or tissues and will steal them from my pocket, so now cleaning takes a little longer!!

Sneezer did you ever get distracted while poo-picking by reading an interesting article in the poo?

I think I have posted this photo before on here. Four hens and I only replace the paper once per week. The length of wood is enough to stop them going under the roosting bars and eating the paper or walking in their poo.

Sets a low standard and fails to achieve it.

I use the plastic fruit trays (plastic basket type)  that I get at market and fill them with shavings.  Super easy to tip out and clean, just an idea :-)  Maybe your local market trader can give/sell you some?

Honestly thought the newspaper had pics of motorcyclists having a 'set to'
and the nearest the camera even had a 'Union Jack' design on his helmet,
then I realised, - good idea, must try it
Yorkshire Rose x Scottish Thistle - nice blooms, but wear a glove
