Fungus Foot Infection?
« on: August 13, 2011, 19:42 »
I have a bantam cockerel who appears to have a fungus like callous on his foot.  I have cleaned it off and put antiseptic spray (septi cleanse) on it but it seems to keep returning.  He is a bit lame but otherwise in fine fettle.  Just wondering if anyone can throw any light on what this might be?

Sorry to hear you've got a chook with Bumblefoot - it's not a nice thing at all and can make your bird very poorly.  One of our chooks is prone to it and has had to be treated twice now.  I found it needed a course of antibiotics (baytril) from the vet to clear it up on both occasions.

You'd be better if you can keep your cockerel in a coop / covered run that can be covered with a soft bedding to keep his foot nice and clean and dry while you treat the infection.  We found cutting out the "bumble" then dressing the chook's foot was the best way to speed up treatment.

It does take a while to clear up though so don't get disheartened.  Good luck and I hope he's soon on the mend.  :)

One of my hybrids has just recovered from bumblefoot (fingers crossed). She had to have 2 lots of baytril (upped the dose on the second course) and vet drained the area. I think I saw her step on a thorn from some pruned roses (felt very guilty) which may have caused it. I kept her in our lean-to/chicken hospital for a couple of days to try to keep the foot clean which is not easy when they poo on the floor! But vet said not to cover area.
One thing which was very helpful was that the vet gave me some aloe vera soap to bathe the hen's foot twice a day. The vet said this particular brand (Natural) had a high amount of the aloe vera in it, which is apparently antibacterial and antifungal. Not sure, but surely can only have helped?
Hope your chook recovers well.
