it can be caused by something they have eaten or by the white not forming correctly. I would check the eggs for the next week or so just to be sure everything is ok, if there is still a problem take whichever hen is laying the problem eggs to a vet for a general check up. Keep feeding a quality feed and if they are free ranging check the surrounding plants.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Quite possibly this is blood but unless it is a recurring problem it's probably nothing to worry about.  Are your hens just coming into lay or starting again after a break if so it might just be a transitory problem?  You could give us a bit of history.

If it persists might be best to consult your vet or ask again with more details of your birds breed, age and laying history.  See the vet if there are any obvious signs of depression or illness.

Thanks for replies - this is the first egg we have had blood in and comes from our little bantam she has been laying more or less an egg every day since Sept Oct time.  They are Sussex Chickens and a Sussex bantam, if that is any help to you.  Will do as you say and take her to the vet but she is very lively and does not seem depressed or indeed looking unwell and eating well on top quality layers pellets - (Marriages) with again small amounts of good quality corn in afternoon - plenty of grit and they are free in the garden to help themselves if needs be.
