small chicks
« on: October 07, 2008, 19:19 »
We have 12 5-week old chicks, but 2 of them are a lot smaller than the other 10. Not sure why, as they are about the same age (we didn't hatch these ones, but bought them in)

Any ideas? Any plans on what we should do?

Cheers

Hi Sheridal

Are they the same breed??

Not much you can do if they're the same breed etc.. apart from feed them they might catch up :)

Are they getting picked on because they're smaller?

Sarah :D

They are all the same breed, and they aren't getting picked on. As far as we can tell they are eating, but it is a tad difficult to tell, unless we seperate them. This would be a tad tricky as we only have one heat lamp. They are due to come off heat next week, so as long as they are ok until then, I'll split them up when they come off heat.

hi there, what breed do you have? are they inside or out, I ask this as seems considering this time of year might be a little early to bring them off heat? Are they fully feathered?. If some are a little small perhaps an extra feeder might help or perhaps a little extra light so they eat for longer. Just a few thoughts....
And where are the pics!

A couple of our Amberlinks seem smaller than the rest, but all from the same hatching.  Maybe the eggs were smaller? I know some of our Babcock chicks were smaller at first as they were from a new batch of parent stock that the hatchery had in.

But they turned in to lovely birds!!!!

They are hubbards. They are in the unheated conservatory at the moment, and are nearly fully feathered, just their heads are a bit fluffly. Once they are off heat, they will remain in the conservatory for a couple more weeks

Unfortunately I can't post pictures as I have a problem getting the photos up due to being on linux and firefox (not sure why)
