Watering schedule
« on: April 12, 2020, 09:16 »
Hi all.

I've read various sites which offer differing opinions on when /how much to water.

Anyone got a link /schedule that they use?

My instinct is to water regularly.

Appreciate any comments /links .

Cheers 👍

To me it depends on these factors:

1) What sort of compost are they in as soil-based ones retain more water than peat-based.
2) Are your seedlings getting any warmth as this will affect the retention of moisture in the compost.
3) My best advice is to lift your pots or trays of seedlings. If it has some bit of weight to it then leave well alone. If it feels rather light, plunge them into a tray of water until you see the surface of the compost go a bit darker, take them out, drain out any excess water then put them back where they were.
Seedlings only have tiny roots and don't need more water than they can take up or you'll lose the lot.

I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

What are you watering and are they in pots or the ground?

A fixed watering schedule is not such a good idea, as the rate at which water evaporates - and the frequency with which you'll need to water - will depend on various factors.

GG has listed some in her post.  Others include the size of a pot or module (small ones dry out sooner), the wind and the heat/sun.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

In my meagre experience a lot of water infrequently is better than a little, frequently.  Regardless of ground or pots.

Lots of people on here are wiser than me though  :)

I wouldn't have thought so at this time of year, during a summer heatwave possibly but the plants will be big enough to tell you when they need watering by then.  Stick your hands in the soil, if it's dry water them but a tuber with a few shoots won't need much watering yet

hasbeans is right.  Your seed tuber will provide what is needed at the start. Watering is most important for spuds when the new potatoes have started to form and swell.

When you do water, yes it should be a proper watering rather than a little and often.  If you do the latter, then the roots of the plant stay closer to the surface and thus are far more prone to drought stress.
