Hi All

I have been offered 6 R.I.R X Light Sussex. I have heard of these before but do they go under a common name, also i understand that they are good layers, has anyone kept them as i want to know if they free range ok.

Snap them up Skyblue. They should make good birds. Its basically what the first comercial hybrid layers were based upon. I wouldn't hesitate if I were you. :D

Yep I've got some  :D  lovely birds, mine are laying well even in these short daylight days. How old are they may be worth asking ? I think they also go by the name of bovan goldlines ?

                  They are still popular for some of the commercial free range units. This tipe of hybrid is a V / good layer, and love to free range , 10 / 10 Richy BOVAN GOLDLINE it is 8)

We use to buy ready sexed straight crosses as day olds more than 40 years ago and they didn't have any fancy made up brand names then. They were known quite simply as Rhode Island Reds cross Light Sussex. :D

yes chickenjohnok mine love to be out of the run and scratching about, but they seem quite happy to "stay in" as well, mine didn't even come out of the shed today  :roll: they seem very interested in the new layer of straw I've just put down and go mad for a handful of mixed grain.

Mine came from a free range farm near me and they seem a very robust bird.

I have silkie/sussex crosses and Black Rocks (plymouth rock/rhode island crosses) and they are brilliant layers and nice sensible birds
