Title: Advice about new coop please
Post by: dizzylizzie on September 08, 2009, 16:19
hi everyone, we are picking up 2 baby barnevelders on friday and i have been making a small coop and run for them to keep them seperate from the others during introductions, check that they are not harbouring nasties, and just generally give them time to grow a bit. my question is even tho they are way too young to lay (8 weeks this week) do i still put nest boxes in....and how high should i put perches? :D :D
i should just say, i will be using the coop im building now as a spare one to seperate unwell girls when the barnies have gone in with the other girls, so it needs to meet the needs of a potentially sick girly also (hopefully i wont need it)but ive never has babies so i dont know how high they need to roost...or how old they are when they start.
thanks lizzie x

hey hun i would put in nest boxes but personally i would leave the perches for just a while , my babes didnt have perches until there were about 12 weeks old  i think and i felt they were strong enough to cope with them.

I wouldn't worry about perches for now Lizzie :) Have some ready to go in for when it becomes an quarantine house but the little uns will be best not perching for a bit yet :)

My Cochins are only just starting at nearly 5 months :)
