Title: broody hen
Post by: darby on July 22, 2009, 16:22
Hens laying well, but one of the black rocks has become broody, and is refusing to leave the house preventing the others from laying as they all seem to lay in same part of nest box...with 6 hens we have a house which houses 12-14 hens so room is not an issue..but have gone from 6 eggs a day to 2 or 3...so what to do with broody hen,or is this normal...thankyou

Afraid this is very normal.. I shoo my girls out into the fresh air for a bit when they go broody, sometimes shut them out, particularly if the weather is hot..    At least if they spend some time outside (even if it is reluctantly) they end up eating and drinking, which they do not do if sat on imaginary eggs!

we have had a bantam being broody for 6 weeks, think she may have just stopped and have a wyandotte, broody for 3 weeks, but the others have stopped laying as well, not sure why, when the 2 were broody, they were both sharing the same nest box....just keep throwing them out to eat and drink...

Our Black Rock is the same.  Everytime I go into the house, I take her out of the nest box, and put her through the gate into the run, but she goes back again.  At the moment I haen't really got anywhere else to put her to make her uncomfortable.

I'd love one of those mesh pet crates then I could put her in there just with food and water!!  That'd sort her out!!

i had to put my broody warren/sussex out on her own with her fertile eggs in an arc and am having to chuck her off every now and then so she eats and drinks and am also hand feding her - soft hey!!
My egg production from 8 hens has now gone down to 3 a day as a result....
Oh well lets hope some of the eggs hatch!
