« on: January 01, 2010, 21:54 »
Hi everyone,

My secetears, clippers, spades etc are begining to become a blunt, so I was wondering if anyone knew just I should use or due to sharpen them back up. Thanks

Oh an happy new year! :)
If you want to be happy for a short time - get drunk.

If you want to be happy for a long time - fall in love.

If you want to be happy forever - take up gardening!

sharp tools are easier and safer - I have a little sharpening iron but I've heard (Joe Swift on GW?) that shear sharpeners make the job easier.

wasn't there a thread a while back that recommended some good youtube sites on sharpening?

A file will do for spades , hoe`s etc and a dremmel type tool has enough power to sharpen secateurs and other small tools.

Those dremel type tools seem to be quite popular for sharpening the smaller tools.
There is a gadget that fits to an electric drill that can be used to sharpen larger items like shears or spades. I use a "diamond card" for knives and secatuers, or an angle grinder for the larger things (spades, hoes)

other people quite like the cigar shaped caborundum stones, they are quite cheap to buy, and I nreckon you could leave one in your allotment shed without it getting pinched ;)

sharpening tools of any kind is not just having a angle grinder ect, you need to understand all the angles and clearances of the cutting edges.
always have a target
and an objective.
