Will my Orpingtons be bantams or LF
« on: September 05, 2011, 21:03 »
Have just picked up 3 chocolate Orpingtons.
They are 19 weeks old and stand around a foot tall. Will these be bantams or are they likely to get alot bigger???

I'll put a photo up tomorrow.
I went to buy something else and didn't ask the size of these.

Well unless you paid silly money for them (about £50 each) then I'd guess they were bantams, or some form of project.

LF chocolate orps are still a work in progress, and despite the colour not yet being recognised by the PCGB, LF birds go for really silly money.

I priced two large fowl pullets at £70.00 each! Needless to say I didn't get them - they were beautiful though!

I'd agree that they are likely to be bantams, but they will grow almost as big as a normal sized hen even so.  The breeder I got my blue orp bantie chick from had chocolate banties and they were buxom girls  ;)  LF orps are massive so I think they would be bigger than a foot tall by now and chocolate LF are not that common as the others have said.

This was my blue orp at around 12 weeks - she's with a Serama which is a tiny bantam

This is her full grown with other banties - hope this gives you an idea of eventual size  :)

I agree, I've done a little bit of research and if they were LF they'd have been sold as that.

Thank you for your replies

They are beautiful, I wonder if they will lay a reasonable size egg with them being larger bantams?
I dog, 1 cat, 1 horse, 1 Light Sussex, 2 Speckledys, 2 Cuckoo Maran:)

Actually any orpington produces a rather small egg for the size of the bird.  A LF orp will produce on average a 55g egg.

and the eggs are not huge for the size of the bird, but very tasty  :D

They are pretty things.

Is a 55g egg a medium (ish) size? I ask as my Orps will lay in the distant future.

Only one of them had just started laying when I got them.

They haven't laid for me yet but I've only had them three days, I expect there still "emotionally" moving in.

Looking forward to that first breakfast.  :tongue2:

I have a choc orp, which I thought was a LF (bought as anyway)  but now I'm not so sure seeing your pics. Flo is around the same age as yours and I have Dotte the Wyandotte who is bigger heightwise, Hmmm

Great natured tho.
