Looking at a 1942 leaflet issued by the Ministry of Food called How to Make Use of the Hedgerow Harvest. It may be 78 years old but the recipes look really good!

I'd never really given any thought to rationing in WW1 - sounds fascinating!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

It didn't come in until late in the war and only applied to a small range of products. It was prompted by some riots as prices were too high on short commodities for ordinary people. Looking across at Russia and the Bolshevik revolution concentrated the government's mind to solve the unfairness.

You have to remember that Britain had the most powerful navy in the world - just the dastardly Hun didn't play fair and wouldn't engage in a fleet action they were bound to lose. So commerce raiders and those new fangled submarines hit our supply lines hard. Something unthinkable in 1914.

Blackberries, elderberries and sloes make fantastic wine too, usually much better than the cheaper stuff at Twongos...
