Cuttings
« on: June 14, 2010, 20:46 »
Are there any plants ready to take cuttings from at this time of the year? I'm looking for hardy perenials really as I like growing plants as well as veg. Thanks :D

As long as you use soft new wood rather than woody wood (if you know what I mean!) you can do quite a few. Nothing lost by giving it a go!
I've just done some penstamon from a branch the chooks mashed down and got 6 new plants. Perennial wallflowers and hardy fuschia are good for cuttings but things like hardy geraniums you divide the root clump. Hollyhocks, foxgloves etc. just collect the seed (or transplant self-sown seedlings that come up in the Spring).

Hi there,
a simple way to increase your stock of most border perennials is to divide the clumps in the spring or autumn or lots can be propogated by root cutting in the winter.you can take non flowering shoots off pinks/border carnations in july and put in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse. You can also divide irises in late summer and basal cuttings from viola in summer put in a cold-frame.Hope this helps.
