One of my six germinated and now has spread over the whole hot bed.

I have tied some of the stems up and now there seem to be many little melons forming

But never having grown them before, I don't know what to look for and I suddenly thought "Perhaps I should nip some of them out and some of the flowers because I don't see how there would be room for all of them to gow to any reasonable size.

What do you think?

Know what you're thinking, Shaun - starting to cool down a bit at night now, isn't it?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

OK, Thank you MJ.
How many fruits should I leave in all?    The bed is about 3 feet x 5. the soil is covered with teram.

What's 'teram', Jim, apart from some scary stuff that Google throws up!

I'm no expert with melons, but with the nights closing in & them getting colder, I'd run with what you have set. Chop the rest of the runners off & keep fingers & everything else you can find - crossed. Some fleece may help.

Hi Shaun,
Well, the bed is covered with black teram through which the stem comes. Also it is surounded with fleece but sometimes I lift it to let the the bees in. Guess I dont need any more bees so should I keep it covered now?
I have been watering with a holey hose and feeding with your comfrey tea through a funnel bottle down the stem hole.
How many fruits do you think I should leave on.
What about my other problem .......... flea beetle holes in my newly planted swedes and rocket! I've read I should use Derris dust or Provado.

I've never heard of either ......... have to ask at Gordale tomorrow.
Jim

Shaun gave me the black teram, Its what road builders use to let water through but not weeds. And I planted the melon through a hole and I'm feeding through this hole  :D
