watering?
« on: July 02, 2013, 10:53 »
hi all, i'm growing my tomatoes direct in the soil this year in the g/h.i just wondered how often other growers who use this method water there toms? I'm currently watering once a week(giving a really good soak) and they seem ok as the roots can reach down to find the moisture they need, also will I still need to feed them? the fruits are just starting to form.thanks  :)

I'm watering every 2 or 3 days depending on the weather.

Whether you feed or not depends on how fertile your soil is, how well you prepared it before planting?

If the soil was well manured before planting, then they shouldn't really need any more feeding - otherwise they will, I find.

I water every other day and feed in the days between.  Toms are hungry and have big fruits to form, these are 90% water.  If you are underwatering the fruit will split.

Admittedly mine are in grwobags and baskets and despite water-retaining granules being used, I am watering twice a day during the really hottest days.
Otherwise daily.

Feeding toms twice a week. Feeding cukes and aubergines 3-4 times a week.

i'm watering twice a day, using the upside down bottle method. feeding once a week.

seems to be working, limited splitting.

the fruits seem to be taking a while to ripen but don't think this is due to watering.

Every couple of days for me, although I'm on clay which is quite good at retaining water from run-off when it rains.

I think it also depends on the type of soil you have and how big your greenhouse is.  My Mum has a large greenhouse which gets very hot and I've rigged up an irrigation system (really easy to put together) for her which waters twice a day.

This usually happens if you suddenly water a lot after keeping them relatively dry - it's what happened to my outside ones after the rain this week  :(

Sometimes a greenhouse border can be very dry as it will not have received any water over the Winter and Spring, and one can easily forget this, or rather I can forget it.
A couple of my border tomatoes suffered a bit of blossom end rot until I surmised they had been short of water. Ok now and I water the border toms every other day, feeding them once a week. I could probably get away with a proper soak every 4 days, but try to give it the regular thing.

I water every day, that way I don't forget if its a watering day and end up with splits, I also water the same quantity and if possible the same time.
