Eggs how much do you sell them for?
« on: October 03, 2010, 20:43 »
I'll start this by saying I'm definitely not a commercial egg producer. I have roughly 40 laying hens of mixed variety and ages. They are what I call semi pets and the eggs are just a beautiful bonus. I love to give a small country gift of half a dozen eggs but of course with this many hens there are times of the year January through to October that I have far more eggs than I could ever eat and if I don't see people they definitely pile up. So I sell them. The box will have a real variety of eggs from pullet to big double yolkers in there. I have a little rabbit hutch on my front drive and an honesty pot and I ask £1 per half dozen. I use new boxes. I would say that the money I make from the eggs barely if at all covers the cost of their feed but it all helps. How much do you ask for your eggs? When I look at free range eggs in supermarkets they are so expensive but I've seen 12 pullet eggs for £1 to being sold like mine.

mine are mixed sizes and colours fed on organic feeds and free ranging - and I ask for £1 per half dozen. Very cheap compared to the shops but here in Lincolnshire there are so many people with hens so even though mine are organic people wouldnt pay anymore.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Most people near me sell them for one pound per half dozen. I have seen organic free range eggs as high as two pound per half dozen in farm shops. Knowing the difference between eggs from true free range, well kept hens and those supplied to supermarkets I would gladly pay one pound fifty or more per half dozen. Supermarket eggs if fresh are probably good but they can be up to 2 weeks old!

Must get a new laptop my pound key is broken. The $ key is OK but that's not much use

Why are duck eggs more expensive than hen eggs? Don't like them personally but just interested to know.

I sell both hen and duck eggs for £1 for half a dozen.  I've been told that I should charge more, but I'm just happy to get some money towards their feed/bedding etc.  The family (obviously) get them for free...  ;)

We currently charge £1 per half dozen.  Only have 11 hens so sell about £4 worth per week which almost covers their feed/bedding.  Give some away too to family and friends.  Have charged £1.50 before which people have paid but think £1 is fairer.

Ii only have 3 birds but somtimes have a lot of eggs I just give them to anyone who shows an intrest. For me selling them is not worth it and I enjoy giving eggs to people for some reason

I'm really jealous, got 10 hens and not had an egg for almost a month!
Not their fault really 5 chicks, 2 ex batts and 2 bantams that are moulting, oh and a light sussex still mothering the ducklings!

Our neighbours sell them for £1 for 6, £1.60 for a dozen

£1 for half a dozen seems a fair price so that's what we sell at.

A collleague gets eggs from a farm and takes orders at work - 90p for 6.  They are huge but very thin shelled and can be rough and long.  My wee chickies have been only laying banty eggs for a week and I have given a few to the neighbours but my greatest pleasure was giving 2 to my granddaughter for her 1st birthday lunch today.  She just loves eggs!!!  :D
