Simply has anyone ever grown this and how does it taste, thinking of putting a couple of rows in. Scorzonera is said to repel carrot fly so has any planted this along side carrots with any success?

I've never grown it but it has quite a pleasant, faintly asparagas flavour. A bit of a pain to peel though.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I've planted salsify - had it in a restaurant in Limoges and it was wonderful - mind you that chef could make turnips into a delicacy, we had a long chat  in Franglais about growing decent veg.
Basically treat as you would parsnips - I'll let you know how they look when I lift them.

John, thanx for that. I saw a re-run of the F word and Ramsey was cooking it, funny really as I was on Thompson and Morgans site and had put it on my list for next year. I going to try and sow it next to the carrots to see if it will deter the evil carrot fly.

Hey, you're welcome - judging by your avatar photo you need to eat more!

Don't think of it just as a companion plant - it's taste is sublime. My wife didn't like it, which was great as I had hers as well :)

Emerges quite rapidly.  Grows very slowly, doesn't get much thicker than a finger.  Delicious.  The leaves are edible in salad too.  And if forgotten, and left until it flowers, it is truly stunning.

Hi all,
         I grew salsify last year,  supposed to taste like oysters, tasted like s*** to me, dug it up threw it on the compost heap

Funny that, I was to believe that the stalks on Swiss Chard was considered to be posh grub by French chefs, that also tastes like S*** and also gets the thrown on the compost heap treatment, however I will try it and see what it is like, taste like many things with us humans is subjective so I might like it after all, plus if that bloke Ramsey cooks it it can't be that bad.

I don't think swisschard stems taste of anything. Swiss chard leaves are a bit bitter but not that bad when it's in stuff that's suppose to be spinachy.
wistfully hoping to one day be mostly organic gardener in North London.

yep the leaves we are eating by the pound (or should that be kilo) even the kids eat it :D  I make a warm salad by frying off some garlic in olive oil, throw in some sliced courgette, cherry toms and finally the chard leaves so they just start to wilt.
