Eating soft shell eggs!
« on: May 13, 2012, 14:09 »
I posted on here a few days ago about my exbats laying soft shell eggs, (thank you for advice)
However a new problem has happened. I checked the coop when i let them out first thing, a soft egg was on the coop floor,  I went to pick it up and 2 of my hens shot in and started to peck at it even as i was trying to lift it without breaking it. Had to fight them off to remove it.
Is this a bad thing? they don't seem to touch the normal eggs but will they if they get a taste for egg? And had how do i stop it? :(

It is perfectly normal for hens to eat soft eggs.  The eggs aren't viable and would soon rot or attract predators to the nest, so they are cleaning up.

Most hens who eat soft eggs will never peck a hard shell, so I wouldn't worry about it :)
