Planting in between potato rows?
« on: May 30, 2014, 13:17 »
Hello All,

Newbie grower here based in Sweden.

I have planted my potatoes in rows a bit too far apart, I am wondering if there is another crop that I could plant in between these at all?

Thanks in advance

Stephen

How far apart are they?

They do produce a lot of leaf and cover quite a lot.

I have about 40cm-50cm between the foot of the mounds.

Hi there, I am very new myself but I heard recently that Pumpkins are very good to plant between potatoes as they both come out round about the same and the pumpkins will just trail around the potato plants.

You'd need to grow something tall, like sweetcorn, that won't be shaded by the potatoes.

Peas, climbing beans?

Partly depends on whether your potatoes are early or late varieties because that will affect how long they will be potentially shading nearby low-growing plants. How long does summer last in Sweden if you're lucky?
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Our summer is much the same as the UK and perhaps a little warmer and we get a few more daylight hours. I guess it can get wintery from October.

The potatoes plants are about 6" high now.

I was thinking some runner beans in one row but I hand't thought about fruit, that would be nice as we do not have much fruit planned yet.

The difficulty you need to consider is harvesting times.  If you will want to harvest the potatoes before you dig up the intercropped plant, you will risk undermining or destabilising the roots of the intercropped plant so that it no longer grows as well (or at all).
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I tried this once, but found that digging up the potatoes without damaging the roots of the sweetcorn was a bit tricky.

If it was me today, with more experience now, I would get a quick crop of something like lettuce or radishes in before the potato foliage gets to it's largest I think

And before you stick the radishes in, think carefully about how many you want to eat - I had 200+ radishes ready at the same time last year doing this! Found out how few of my friends like radishes!

I'm now thinking that a few tomato plants in grow bags might be the trick as I can move them if needed.

Careful with that idea as toms and potatoes share the same blight - if one gets it, they'll all get it

Yes, but they all get it anyway, even if they're at the other end of the plot - in my experience  :(
