Green house glass replacement
« on: February 23, 2009, 22:15 »
I bought a second hand green house off ebay.8 x 6

I lovingly wrapped the glass in bubble wrap but someone (no one admitting liability )stood on one of the piles.  I have lost if I put the random pieces together about one long side.  The trouble is that the pieces are missing from different sides.

I have several options now.

Try and find a pile of glass on e bay .
Buy a cheap 2nd greenhouse.
Local glass merchant for the replacement glass
Polycarbonate sheets.
Wrapping the structure in polytunnel plastic.

I didnt fore see this quandry so would appreciate anyones advice who has been in a similar position.

Thanks Alan

It is quite expensive to buy new, so I would try to find a 2nd hand source if I were you. Near us there are some farms with ancient falling down greenhouse that are no longer in use. I wish I had asked them for some glass before I bought new when I replaced the panes in my greenhouse last year.

Hi, you could do the same as us and make friends with your local double glazing fitters. They have loads of old glass they need to get rid of and it is quite easy to cut and perfectly ok for greenhouses.  It was GrannieAnnie that gave us the idea!Nic

I doubt that, most double glazing these days is toughened glass which cannot be cut.

I would suggest keeping you eye open for old derelict greenhouses to see if you could buy some squares cheaply, you would have to make sure they are the right size or larger.

As a retired decorator/glazier, always stand glass down on edge, NEVER flat.

I had to buy glass for mine last year and our local glazier sold greenhouse glass quite cheaply.

I think in fairness, nicchick was rerfering to the old windowpanes that the fitter removes, not in fact the D.G.U's, which i agree would be impossible to use. ;)
