Just popped into my local Morrison's to get some bit's and pieces and as I walked in the door there were piles of buckets taped up 8 for 99p, I picked a pile up and checked with a guy working there and he confirmed they were for sale.
Just got home and counted, I got 36 buckets for 99p BARGAIN
-
Tee hee now that is a bargain well done! I picked some more up a couple of weeks ago, they were slightly smaller than usual and prob a more useful size - Morrisons is going up in my estimation! :D
-
:( Pants Morrisons closed at 8pm perhaps a trip tomorrow is worthwhile. I need buckets.
-
Perfect!
Will be popping along for these... i need some buckets for some 'guerilla gardening'. Planning to grow masses of spuds on a hidden bit of field. These buckets will save it being done in the ground.
-
My OH popped in Asda last Monday and noticed a pile of black plastic flower buckets,he asked the assistant if they threw them away but was told sorry we send them back to the suppliers. Perhaps i should mention that Morrisons are selling theirs for 99p. You never know with the supermarket wars Asda might start selling theirs for 50p.
I think i'll have a word with the store manager tomorrow. If i fail. Morrisons here ;) i come.
-
whoohoo! there's a big morrisons near where I work and I'm finished early tomorrow so I'll pop in! thanks for the tip 8)
-
I regularly get these from Morrisons, they are absolutely perfect for all sorts of things :)
-
Only prob I have with them is the wee b****rs stick together as they are not always dry when they stack em up - but hey ho beggers and all that! ::)
-
If you dont see them ask. I would even go as far as to say try to buy them when you cannot see any on display. Everytime I have asked, the assistant has given me loads and always marked at 99p.
-
I got mine free from Tesco. Asked at the mini-Tesco last week and they gave me 3 spare ones. Happened to be in the big Tesco early Saturday morning and they were organising their mothers day flowers. Massive stack of buckets. I asked the lady if I could have 4 or 5 and she said take as many as you need and get a trolley. I took the lot - about 55!!! Free!!!!
-
I grow all my toms in them and have been getting them for years there. They hold perfect amount of compost for gowing toms and I grow all mine against a south facing wall with trays under each for watering. Then I set my canes in each pot and secure them at the top with one continuous wire. Such little work that way as you can see side shoots to pinch out. Best bagin for ages!
-
I have grown potatoes in mine.
Just one potato in each for a nice early if small crop.

My tesco said I can't have them as they send them back to be re used. Don't believe them.

Mrs Ploppy, do you cut the bottoms off or drill holes in the sides when growing toms as I want to do this with mine. Cheers :)
-
I've just been and bought 2 lots, have never noticed them before. I am planning to grow my toms in them too, they look nicer than growbags as well!

Yeah, mine too. I'll see what Mr Sainsburys says tomorrow.
-
Great idea about planting potatoes in them. Will definitely be doing that tomorrow.
-
Ive had these from asda's for free a few times and use them for tomato growing
-
so why are large plant pots expensive
-
so why are large plant pots expensive
because people will pay
-
Tesco told me that they are sent back but if you get a considerate person then they still give them away so keep trying! Planted potatoes in mine today, along with carrots, salad and radishes.
Why do people pay for large plant pots? Because they look much nicer than black buckets!!!!
-
Had to ask for mine in Morrisons - they only had 2 left and charged me 20p - still a bargain though ! Will go back again soon and try again , although mothers day & Valentines is probably peak time
-
They sell them at the local spar shops around here 0.10 each. I was in a local garden centre Sunday gone, plant pot the same size and of much inferior /thinner easier to split £1.95. Ridiculous! The black ones are great if you can get them. I noticed earlier someone said they stick inside one another. Indeed they do but to get them out simply drill a hole in the outside one only and push the top one out through the hole with a stick/screwdriver. You would be drilling drinage holes in them anyhow. Occasionally you do get 2 stuck together that will not budge. Just leave them and use the 2 together afterall at 10p each you can't complain.
-
I got 9 for 99P today at my local Morrisons.
-
I got 24 from asdas today for nothing. The lady on the counter said i could have as many as i wanted, all i had to do was ask.
-
just poped down to morrisons and bought a lode of them great
-
I am now the proud owner of 16 :D :D bundle of 8 for 99p
-
I use Morrison's buckets and also black 1 litre ice cream tubs, I drill four 6mm holes in the bottom. You can also use buckets (and the ice cream tubs) without holes to catch water draining out of the pot, put a stone in the bottom to space the pot up.
-
Have removed the bottoms of three of my Morrison pots. I've stood these in a deep garden trough full of compost and slow release fertiliser - found in the garage! - and have filled the pots themselves too, ready to grow tomatoes! The plan is to give them more 'leg room' and help them not to dry out. Oh, and have put a few marigold seeds round the pots as companion plants.
-
I actually managed to get some of these and have sown lots of salad leaves in them ... and they are up in only three days!! Kept thr rest for individual tomato plants
-
good idea that sunshine, still got a few cut and come again stuff to sew so might give that a try.
-
The radishes are up now too - must be the black plastice reatining heat
Thanks for the Morrison's tip Kentish Karl -- good one :D :D :D

I work at Asda and last year I got loads for nothing. We dont send them back they go in the mangler. I asked why ppl couldnt be given them and was told that it would be a nuisance if ppl expected them and started asking all the time. Fair enough really , once things are expected, ppl abuse it.
-
The greeter in our Asda told me they stopped giving them away as people often sold them on, but he made an exception for me. I must look honest :)
-
speaking as a florist and the owner of many black buckets. Although they stick together they do come apart when you run them under hot water. Handy if you want one that doesnt leak from drilled holes

I've been getting these buckets from morisons for a while now 8 for 99p, when i went there the other day there was none about , had a word with the lady that deals with fruit veg and flowers she put my name down for 6 lots of them when they had gathered enough they rang me up to come and collect, maybe people might want to try and ask to see if they will do this for them as well, nothing to lose in asking, my partner wouldn't do this he reckons i'm being cheeky in asking but you dont get anything unless you ask nowadays, got loads of pots the other day from local garden centre as well was welll chuffed
-
lidl will gie you these for free! i left with 32 last month, not sure that i need 32 but you soon fill them up.
-
They are the perfect size for aubergine plants :)
You cannot move in my 6 x 6 greenhouse because of them.
-
My greenhouse is chokka with 24 chillies in my morrisons pots - absolutely love em!
-
Just got 2 free from my local small Coop. They thought i was mad but will save me some more :) and they are bigger than the tomato pots i bought in Wilko, and cheaper
Just don't be embarressed about asking!

Only been a member for five minutes but already amazed at the resource and advice available on the site - and this topic is a good example of how great it is. I have shopped in Morrisons locally for donkey's years and never, ever noticed these pots. Since reading this thread I looked and, oh dear, they they were, or at least there they were until I chucked 'em into my trolley. Presumably they have been there for yonks, just goes to show what you can see when you know what to look for.......
Used a camping stove to heat the business end of a huge philips screwdriver and punch-melt 8 drain holes in each from a couple of batches (although prior to reading the tricks for separating jammed ones I did manage to wreck one in trying to rip em apart) and filled 'em with overflow toms, peppers etc. Brill idea for a few spuds though - how did you do those, was it plant in half full pot and earth up as it grew or what?

I put about 3" compost then seed tatty on top and covered it with more compost...then as it grows through just keep earthing up till its reaches top. Theyre ideal for folks with little space to grow things.
-
