When chicks hatch what do you do with cockerels?
« on: March 30, 2013, 17:59 »
When hatching auto sexing chicks, what do you do with the boys.  Do you dispatch them on day one or wait?  How do you do it? Do you try to rehome/sell them? Is that successful?  What about concerns they maybe used for cock fighting?

Any thoughts to add to those around circling round my head most welcome

the idea of auto sexing chicks is so that you can cull them as soon as possible, this way you don't have to waste money on feeding them
Staffies are softer than you think.

Coq au vin perhaps.  If you can keep them to adults without upsetting the neighbours.

It is probably less stressful dispatching a chick than a cockerel. Someone with a snake might find it useful.

I raise mine until they start to crow and then turn them into ready meals. I find killing chicks more awkward than adult birds and it does seem a bit of a waste. They still live a lot longer than most meat birds
My maths shows that bird is equal to or greater than the word...

I wait until mine mature, mate and then dispatch for eating.  That way you ensure you haven't made a mistake and culled a hen.  He has had a short but happy life, you get the next generation for free and nothing is wasted.   ;)

I used to try and rehome them, now its a case of when they crow, they go, they have had a good but short life

But it does depend on the kind of bird (breed) but so far I dont have any
It's all about the journey, not the destination

How old are they before they start to Crow? Are they big enough for the Pot by that time?

I think they are about 18-20 weeks old, the last one was about that, and yes, he came for Sunday dinner as a invited guest  ;)

I have had cockerels that have crowed at around 14 weeks so I don't think there is a hard and fast rule.  Even young bantams at 16 weeks are worth culling for the meat.  Not a great amount but waste not want not.   ;)
