Title: Potato Comp advice
Post by: Redgoat on March 20, 2018, 17:02
I will be having a go in a local show potato growing comp this year.
The show is on the last sat in August and the task is to grow the heaviest crop of potatoes in a Crystalix tub (picture attached).
Any advice on what variety to choose , feeding regime and went to plant the tuber greatly appreciated !

Sarpo Mira gives good yields when grown in containers. 10lb+ can be regularly achieved from 2 tubers in a 30L pot using MPC with a handful of blood fish and bone mixed in at sowing time, then just regular watering, from a growing season of March to mid-late October. Not sure how quickly the tubers develop and what would be there come August.

You need something that bulks up quite early if you are weighing them in August, a 2nd early, or early maincrop. I'd go for Estima as tubers grow big quickly.
Not the tastiest but you are growing for weight  ;)

Grow in multipurpose compost and add extra fertiliser; some manure will help with water retention, as water tends to run straight though the pots, I find.

Good luck!

I believe that Kondor is the choice of giant potato growers but I'm not sure how easy they're to get hold of.
