I have ordered my onions and garlic from Suttons as their postage is only 95p compared to T&M and Marshalls who want in excess of £3.  :lol:
Gobs - is it too late to plant seeds now for putting in the ground in autumn?

hi duglas, my autumn planted onions look similar to yours, but mine maybe have fatter necks.  i haven't pulled mine yet, as i have been using them as and when i need them and i heard also that they don't store well.  so my ears pricked up when you said yours store ok, do you store yours in cardboard straight after you pull 'em or dry them out for a while first? :D

I well hope not, as I just sowed some last week in a cold frame, late with lot of things as what the spring was like...

So if I want to plant Overwintering onions from seed for next year I should sow them now????????

Yes, they used to be originally a few years back, I saved seed from them.

( You can spot uneven size, shape and also skin colour! :lol: )

I think it depends when you want to plant.
It seems you can sow seed now for putting the plants in the ground in Autumn or you can get the sets to plant in the autumn.
I have ordered my sets but I think I will have a go at sowing seed as well this week end.  :lol:

thanks matron...iv never grown onions from seed i always thought they took 2 years  :oops: 1st year to get them to onion set size and then 2nd year to grow to harvest size  :roll:  so i just need to treat them like leeks? think il have a go at doing it both ways and see which way is best in my garden
