spuds and compost
« on: June 25, 2008, 16:59 »
Im going to try some pots in a bin soon, and I dont want to lay what little money Ive got on shop bought compost.. Ive made some of my own in my compost bin, it seems well rotted, its been there a year or so
Could I put my pots in this, or is it too rich and will be too strong like it is for seeds and seedlings?
Fanks all  :D

Potato peelings seem to grow well in it!

I'd still be inclined to 'water it down' with something like a 50/50 mix with soil, it will go further after all, but no doubt there's someone out there that's got the 'T' shirt.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

if you did your own compost in a compost bin as per normal, you'll want to mix it down with shop compost and/or loam (soil) at about 5-1 to 10-1. home  compost made properly is over packed with nutrients and a bit fierce for most plants. If you want to send me a sample ill get the lab to tell you the conductivity (overall nutrient concentration) levels, then you'll know how much to mix it  down to.

I've grown pots almost entirely in well rotted manure, they were fab.
