Bumper crop of courgettes
« on: September 05, 2011, 00:11 »

Hi

I raised 6 courgette seeds not nowing how many courgettes would grow.
Plants were huge, yields incredible could not eat them quick enough.
Gave loads to friends and family.
Leaves all turned silver with mildew, looked terrible, cut away the worst leaves, now there are loads more courgettes coming thru.
However how long can i expect them to keep going before weather affects them

Thanks carl

They can keep going until the first frosts.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They can keep going until the first frosts.

....but with cooler conditions, especially nights, they will be a lot slower.

How odd - Courgettes here don't grow, they swarm!  :D I could have done with no more than two plants. "Soliel" F1 - Yellow and promiscuous!

phew!  that's even worse than my average: 8 plants 3 courgettes.... worst crop ever, as usually they are so productive.

First time in my life I've had a complete failure from courgettes, normally I'm disappearing under a pile of them. Took them ages to get going, and once they did they were almost immediately attacked by mildew, mice and moles.

bumper crops of the old corgis here....

Most people tend to plant courgettes too close, they need plenty of air circulation to combat the mildrew....  (spray with a milk solution to prevent mildew - as milk is alkaline this deters the mildew spores)
Less is more, ie courgettes are very prolific so you only need a max of 3 plants which will still inundate you....
when planting make a slight bowl shape to allow watering to collect round the plant, remember to water the ground and keep the leaves dry....
Needless to say a lot of manure underneath helps with feeding AND water retention...
Death OR Cake ???

Some time ago I found some mixed pack of 6 assorted seeds from Johnsons called Courgettes & Summer Squash...  I palnt a few of each - dark green, light green, round, paty pans (yellow and green) and the Lebanese variety are absolutely the best type I've ever had..  It is a slightly plumper almost large pear shaped and has a firm light green edible skin...

Has anyone else tried the Lebanese... I have never found it seperately so always buy the 6 pack..
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

Our 2nd year on the lotty and only the first with courgettes. Got about half a dozen plants together with one marrow plant (2nd one died), two pumpkin plants and a butternut squash. We're absolutely inundated with courgettes, can't pick them fast enough, the second large marrow is well on it's way, we've got two football sized pumpkins so far & swelling fast, and several small (golf ball sized) squashes.

Didn't realise growing these things would be so easy  :tongue2:
