i want to grow potatoes in some buiders bags this year and  was wondering if anyone has tried this .  i have a mix of community compost and manure and was wonering if this will be a suitabe growing medium.  i woud be interested to hear from others who have had experience with this.

You can use any container provided light can't get into the sides. The growing mixture you suggest is a tad rich and might produce too much top growth at the expense of tubers so you might cut it a bit with shredded leaves or straw, or some potting mix. Also be careful with watering, for the same reasons.

Last year I tried 75% compost mixed thorougly with 25% well rotted manure and had a decent early crop (Swift). Try to use a breed of potato that doesn't grow to high (short haulm) as they are prone to wind damage unless you can protect them.

Used cheapo compost of 4 bags for £10 from Wicks  . Added a couple of handfulls of chicken poo  each time I earthed then up, (twice) and they came out fine.

Previous years I have mixed sand with the compost to improve drainage, didn't last time however.
