Horse manure - Too many contradicting answers !!!
« on: February 29, 2008, 15:37 »
Hello,

I've picked up a couple of bin bags full of free 'oss muck on the way back from the tip and have done a quick search on the forums for the best advice.

Unfortunately, everyone says something different !  :?

So....do I put it on the compost heap (only just started with veg/soil/grass/etc) or leave it in the bags for a year or dig it in neat or plaster the house walls with it ?

There must be a definitive method. And does it feed or just condition the soil ?

I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Rob

Hi...as I understand it....
Too fresh - it will burn the rhubarb, as for sirloin nah! I won't go there!!!
To delicate :?:
What I'm now collecting is being mixed into my compost for next year.

Still learning, still experimenting....but'll get there in the end.....
....Bye PAH

if manure is fresh, i would soak it (in a sack) in a barrel of water, and stir every now and then and then water my tomatoes  and sweetcorn later in the year  :D
if it grows, it grows! if it doesnt ,, ah well .. there's always next year. :-)

That's a new one !

i did a search earlier and the advice was to do almost anything and everythign with it but if I can bung it all on the compost heap and accelerate or improve it, it'll be easier than leaving it steaming in a corner to attract flies.
If, however, leaving it covered will make it so much better, I'm happy to do that but don't want to stink out the neighbours over the back !
We won't smell it cos it'll be down the end of the garden.  8)

Rob
keep 'em coming.

I would say if it looks like stable manure ie damp / dry straw / shavings mixed with droppings pile it up and leave it for a year. If it looks like compost / soil the use it in your garden.

Plastering the walls is the alternative if none of the above apply

Horse pate is great. 8)  Especially on toast.

If fresh, cover with old carpet or black sheeting should rot down sufficiently an about six months.

Only worry about applying fresh manure is:

1 - full of nasty stuff, you don't get it in horse, not grown for food

2 - robs soil whilst decaying, mostly problem with lose sandy soils and if it contains wood shavings :!:

3- burning plants: don't apply any for and around seedlings and don't put too close to plants, leave a few inches, it will just leach in by weathering all the same as if you bothered mucking about with a liquid feed.

Sorted. 8)

I usually plaster the flat walls with ours - because it come from the Royal Mews and we have to by law.
But you need to rot it a bit before you fling it about - either in a general heap or as part of a compost heap.
I have found that if you put it on your compost heap it rots down quickly, whereas it takes a bit longer on a muck heap.
Putting it in a dustbin full of water only takes a couple of weeks before it's usable.
You can never get enough manure.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Thanks peeps,

I think I'll pop a layer on the compost to speed that up a bit. I'll keep a bit back to rot down over summer.

And I'll plaster the toilet with the rest with a bit of dog and cat hair (got no horse hair) to bind it. Don't think it was royal mews. Not that close to the council tip.

Might even improve the decor. Our bungalow is just a jerry built monstrosity from the 1920's. All recliamed bricks and shallow foundations. But it survived the war and the great earthquake of 2008 so it can't be all bad.

...I'm already an expert...and I've only properly started digging over the end of the garden a few weeks ago !!

But I did have a few years playign at it ages ago but just followed orders.

One of the bags split so had to transfer to rubble bags. Will it be ok in bags or does it need to be aerobic ?
