Best jacket potatoes to grow
« on: March 29, 2020, 12:35 »
Hello,

This is my first post and actually my first time at growing ANY fruit or veg!
I really want to grow my own jacket potatoes in pots as I don’t want to have the whole garden taken up as I have children and dogs. I currently buy supermarket potatoes called Marabel, which I’ve seen a few posts on here saying they are grown by Albert Bartlett. So, with that in mind, and no seeds for them, what would you suggest would be the next best potato I can purchase and grow? I like the soft, buttery taste of these if that helps?

Thank you in advance 😊

I used to grow Desiree which I thought was a good baker.

I like those as well, also Pentland Javelin left to grow (rather than picking them as earlies) make very good jacket spuds. Delicious magazine agrees with me ;)

Thank you 😊

I read that Vivaldi are good ‘buttery’ potatoes but I’ve been looking for the seeds and them to be out of stock everywhere; actually, most gardening things are 😂😂

We like Picasso or Setanta  for jackets, both are delicious and floury.

I love Ambo for jacket. They give a lovely thick skin and a well textured inner.

I'll put in another vote for Picasso which is lovely and fluffy (although can grow very large if left for long!) with Ambo in second :D

Hi,

For this year at least, buy what ever quantity you need  of bakers as a trial from a supermarket and see how you get on, most of the varieties on sale as usually named!

Some times all the potatoes have been done with growth retardant to stop them sprouting prematurely, but not to worry, set them up to sprout, you still have lots of time yet.

Only allow one eye and shoot to grow on each and when it is time to plant out plant them quite deeply as you are after a few large potatoes not lots of small or medium ones.

And don't forget to fertilize them as you plant them.

Cheers and good eating.
STOP, and smell the roses!

I must disagree with the advice to buy potatoes from the supermarket and plant them as crops.  They are not certified virus free.  There are stringent plant health rules around potatoes, for good reason.

Don't risk it for yourself or any neighbouring gardeners.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I like Ambo for a jacket potato.   If you leave Red Duke of York to mature - they are a first early, then they get quite big and make excellent jackets.  They are more prone to slug damage than Ambo though.
