Hello.
I have tried growing spaghetti squash for the first time this year and am a little confuzzled by the results.
Pics below.
I grew 4 plants - 2 died on planting out. Stuck a seed out in the place of one that died and it has grown with no mollycoddling whatsoever ::)
They look like 2 different plants: one has a compact (but big) growth habit and produces huge green squashes; the other has a trailing habit and is white and a bit smaller - but more like the picture on the packet (although the picture on the packet shows creamy, butternut coloured squashes).
The green compact squash is looking pretty prolific - 3 so far between 1.6kg and 1.9kg in weight! And more fruits forming.
The trailing white one - 1 fruit and no more appearing on the established plant currently (the seed planted straight out hasn't got quite big enough to fruit yet).
Do you think I've simply got a mixed seed in the pack (Franchi - Seeds of Italy - Zucchino Vegetable spaghetti) which is what I'm thinking and if so can anyone identify me big green squash?? :D

The green two are how my pumpkins grow before fattening and turning orange, i never seem to get a round pumpkin like the traditional ones, mine are always orange and fat bottomed and skinnier tops.

A bit of both not compact but also not like a true squash lol :unsure: i havent tried one yet but i hope it is a spagetti and not a pumpkin in disguise, i wasnt expecting it to be so orange

Soon as I saw the green ones I immediately thought courgettes. The right one is a spaghetti squash. I have loads of them growing in the yard now and they're trailing everywhere but so far 2 plants have 9 squash on them with more coming so I'll let them continue world domination.
I've often had packages of one type/variety of veg and a rogue seed of something else has jumped in. I know the companies try their best to avoid this, but seeds will be seeds.

I don't mind the odd rogue seed - I was just curious as to what it might be.
I do fear its a courgette!
I'm a bit disappointed with spaghetti squash so far - not very vigorous it seems. :(

My spaghetti squash is like the right hand one. Not even the same shape as the green ones as it is more oval.
Do you know how to cook it?

I did think the green ones looked oddly like courgettes ::).
Well then - look at my HUGE courgettes!! 1.6-1.9kgs each!! :lol: :lol: :lol:

I've had the same problem with Seeds of Italy Devon. It was a few years ago and I can't find the picture now, but I got exactly the same shaped fruits. As they ripened, some went an orange colour, some went one end orange and the end stayed green, some just went deeper green.
They were orange fleshed squashes and tasted OK. The flesh was fairly thin and there was a big cavity it the centre and the seeds were attached to the fleshy sides. From memory, they did not trail that much.
Maybe a throw back to a distant ancestor of the spag squash :unsure: Worth keeping to see if they are squash though :)

Picked another one tonight that weighed in at 6lb 4oz are they meant to be that big :blink:

The Zeppelin shaped bloated one is indeed Bolognese and you eat them smallish. It's no tragedy if they get away from you but they are at their best when small. They are quite good keepers though, for courgettes that is :)

Do you know how to cook it?
Bake it in the oven for about 30 minutes at about 350F. Wear oven gloves because it's hot or you can let it cool a bit. Slice it in half and scoop out all the centre seeds. Then with a fork, scrape away at the remaining insides. They'll start to shred just like spaghetti strands.
You can top with just salt and butter, or as I do with pesto and parmesan. Yummy stuff.

Have you eaten any yet. Mine look like the small white one and taste devine. But I have in the past also eaten the green ones. The white ones have a pale yellow flesh and the green ones have an orange flesh. Both shred easily with a fork when cooked I suggest you cook them as spagetti squash and see.. :D

I've just come to terms with them being courgettes! :tongue2: :lol:

There is a whopper of a courgette that I've left on the compact-but-large plant :lol:
