Poppies
« on: June 26, 2013, 14:17 »
A friend of mine is looking to to grow a garden of poppies next year, to commemorate 100 years since the outbreak of WW1. I know absolutely nothing about flowers, and was wondering if anyone here can help? He'd like to know what is the best way of growing them, when to plant them (in order to flower next year) and will winter/cold weather kill them?

Any advice greatfully received  :)

We have yellow ones in our garden and i cant get rid of them, they self seed and come up every year witout fail.

I have given up trying to get rid and may well buy some more seeds to add to them, if you cant beat em join em.

Premier seeds have some lovely colours available or are you going for all reds. I am going to sprinkle some seeds o the allotment wildlife area AKA waste ground. Better than looking at weeds

Sprinkle seed over the soil/compost and don't cover - they need light to germinate. That's all I know to do so far...!

It is a lovely idea though.

I have found that I have most success with just scattering the seed over the ground. I have tried sowing in modules and they germinated but I lost them all over winter. I think they prefer a sandier soil, but they are self sowing themselves all over my allotment now (which is clay) from my home made compost. As Beetroot Queen says, once they establish themselves, they self seed freely. I tend to scatter the seed at around the time that the heads are ripe naturally (over the next few weeks here). :)

I think most poppies are annuals, but that they self-seed prolifically.  The red wild poppy certainly is an annual.

My seed catalogue says to sow Mar-May and Aug-Oct, for flowering from June onwards.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yes make sure you get the Annual poppy as the oriental poppie's flower in their 2nd year.
