Potted fruit trees
« on: August 07, 2016, 10:15 »
Hello fellow growers
Does any one have any experience with potted fruit trees,it is some thing i am thinking about buying,as we live in a very windy exposed area,at least i can move the trees from the worst of the weather when it is bad.
Do they crop well?,i would like to try apples, plum, and may be a pear.Lillileaf

We bought a "special offer" lot of five trees a few years back -- 2 apples, 2 pears and a cherry --- and they fruited very well indeed. Very dwarfing rootstock and plenty of water when fruit is developing was key. Still have them, now planted in the ground 15yrs old and are only 1.5-2m tall.

Moved them as space became available, otherwise they would have stayed in the pot. Fed late Summer and early Spring with potash to boost flowering. 18ins pots

Well worth it

Some varieties of apples and pears, especially 'patio fruit trees' are suitable for growing in tubs, as there are some very dwarfing rootstocks that limit plant heights. Best to use a John Innes no. 3 type compost as feed well at least twice a year. Should get some great crops! Cherries, plums and other stone fruit are not as suitable but you could try a dwarfing rootstock in a big tub?
