I saw a fox today!
« on: July 23, 2007, 02:04 »
I saw a fox on my allotment this afternoon. I wasn't expecting this!

It looked lovely, small (but I have never seen one for real so not sure what is the normal size), and soft. It came quite near me but as soon as he saw me, he stopped, turned around and left.

I would like to know if they are dangerous to humans. What about the crops ? Do they eat off vegetables ?

Thanks

I think foxes are carnivores, so the crops will be fine. It was probably a young one, they are starting to find their feet now and going out and about in the world.
Harlow is actually full of foxes, if you have a late night and drive home you will see them along the grass verges, and they will also eat into the bin bags left out for the dustmen.

They can damage vegetables: tramp them down, dig them up while looking for worms, mice  etc.

foxes is a lovely creature to watch.i could never shoot one but i guess those who keep chickens  would say different.
foxs are of no danger to you most are very scared of any humuns.but never touch a fox due to the foxes way if he was to bite you you would prob end up with a nasty infection

Thanks for the advice. It looked so soft that that made me want to stroke it  :D From some videos I saw on youtube, mine was definitely a young one, smaller than an adult.

It did look very scared indeed so unlikely to attack me but better be safe than sorry.

Brucesgirl, I know there are foxes but had never seen one that close

Aunt Sally, they like worms ?   I should collect all those I see when digging, they would have a big dinner !

Foxes are great and best of all - they like rabbits!

My plot is overrun with rabbits and the only thing that keeps the numbers down are the foxes. I did see a cat the other day though, it had caught a rabbit on the plot and was dragging it home - it couldn't pick it up as it was about the same size as the cat!

So much to do, but so little time.

foxes will actually eat fruit and so do badgers.

i used to work in a vineyard - it was so funny seeing the badgers standing up on their hind legs - pinching bunches of grapes.

you can always tell if foxes have been around - they leave an aweful smell behind

According to a gamekeeper I know they prefer rats to anything, certainly the one we get always goes straight to the compost bin which seems to be the local rat population meeting point.

They can dig a pretty big hole in their quest for worms.
